I was inspired by the platter of pomegranates and clementines on our dining table – the colors on the platter complementing those in the fruits, the tropical flowers (thanks, Nikki!) set next to the platter, and the stark black and white photos on the wall behind them set as a contrast to the other, colorful objects… and out came this still life with a bit of a vintage feel.

Have a great Wednesday, everyone!

The Edible Sarasota launch party was a great success last night. The team put together a fun, tasty event with about 200 people packed outside Whole Foods, munching on yummy drinks and treats from awesome vendors, such as Rosa Fiorelli Winery, Mi Pueblo‘s new vegan and organic menu, Libby’s Cafe + Bar – who served their deviled eggs with Mote Marine American Sturgeon Caviar, the dish featured on the cover of Edible Sarasota, and of course Whole Foods.

Jazz Juvenocracy served as the music for the event – and they are incredible. A group of six kids all around the age of 15, they sounded like a well-seasoned professional jazz band – and they are. They were invited to play at the world-famous Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland July 2-17, 2010 (tax-deductible donations for their plane fare can be made on their home page). In the raffle, Alex from the band won my gift certificate for a free photo session, and he generously donated his win to his band. I couldn’t be happier with the winner(s), and I can’t wait to photograph this awesome bunch.

What also made the launch party a big night for me is that I put together my first vendor display for my business! I actually lost sleep over this, and while it might not seem like a big deal – and isn’t, really – I stress over things like this. What kind of pens do I put for the sign-up sheet? Will my 20×30 frame tip over and hit someone? Will anybody even be interested in my photography? I’m happy to say that there were no injuries, no ink issues. While it was an event  focused on food – people were there to celebrate the launch of a magazine that’s all about food (duh), and every other vendor offered edible goodies – I met great people, ran into some I hadn’t seen in a while, and was there to support the magazine (and the individuals behind it) that I’m really proud to be part of. And I’m pleased to say that I’m now much less scared to have a booth at a future event. I can do it. Phew.

Here’s my little corner:

Thank you to Tracy, Tina, John, Matt, and everyone else with Edible Sarasota for including me in your awesome endeavor. 🙂 And thanks to Nikki for connecting me with Tracy and for the support yesterday (and every day). I know I haven’t just won an Oscar, but thank you also to my family for the help – and for coming to celebrate! – and to Angie for lending me the very needed tabletop easels!

Yesterday I went to the just-launched farmers market at the New Medicine Community in Bradenton (info here), and while it was pretty small with not more than 10 vendors, the vibe was great, and I met some really nice people. The idea behind it is to bring customers together not only with the farmers who grow their foods but with local chefs and restaurants who use ingredients that are grown locally and/or with organic practices. Chef Cheryl does cooking demonstrations and offers free samples, Vertori’s Pizza‘s owner Christine Harman is there with baked-on-site, entirely gluten-free goodies like the absolutely delicious pizza, stuffed shells, ravioli, and homemade packaged products (bread, treats, etc.), and NMC offers free hot coffee and tea, which was very needed during yesterday’s chilly afternoon. Dawn of Sensible Soaps is also a vendor, selling many handcrafted soap products. I sampled the citrus from King Farm Myakka, doled out by the Kings’ very friendly – and knowledgeable – retired-doctor father. I took his advice and purchased some of his favorite citrus, the Orlando tangelo, a juicy, sweet, unique citrus that will only be around for a few more weeks. Other regular vendors include Bob’s Veggie Patch, Greens on the Gro, Therapeutic Massage by Don, and Hack Urban Garden; check the New Medicine community Produce This Week list before you go to see what’s currently available.

Here are some shots I took of the spread:

And then some photos of this little one who quickly became a friend. The 20-month-old was absolutely adorable and loved her time at the market, collecting soap, running around, and munching on the broccoli-garlic pizza sample from Vertori’s. Sadly, I didn’t capture her white-blond hair due to the cold temperatures, but her eyes are ridiculously gorgeous, too:

My oatmeal recipe this weekend was a hit, and by “a hit,” I mean a few people told me they wanted to make it, and my sister has made it every morning since (yes, since Saturday). Okay, I’m not sure that constitutes as a big deal, but regardless, I’m inspired to post more recipes.

I’ve been a food writer for a few years, with my monthly column, In Good Taste, being printed in a healthy living magazine here in Sarasota for nearly 5 years (random example here). During the many years I served as the managing editor for that magazine, I became aware of – and applied to my life – a more healthy way of eating and cooking. Since writing that column, I’ve missed the culinary aspect of my work – but I’m excited to use my photography blog as an outlet for both my recipes (either mine or have been tweaked from others’) and my food photos.

I also became involved with the just-launched Edible Sarasota, a magazine which has allowed me not only to learn more about the edible world but also to write about and photograph something I love.

All of that is simply some background as to why I’ll be delving into food photography and posts in addition to my other work… This particular entry will just highlight our “Jellie Mix,” a snack mix that J and I created for our wedding guests and put in their welcome bags. I wouldn’t so much call it a recipe, hence the quotes in the header, but an assembly of ingredients. We made it for our wedding guests because we felt it represented us as snackers (we as a couple are always in possession of some sort of snack, and it usually involves nuts or chocolate) and because it’s quite filling and easy to tote around. Well, here it is. Hope you like a little taste of Jellie!

Jellie Mix

Equal parts (or any ratio you prefer, really):

  • Unsalted almonds
  • Salted peanuts
  • Whole Foods’ 365 brand dark and white chocolate chunks
  • Whole Foods’ bulk aisle’s grain-sweetened milk-chocolate-covered raisins

There you have it. Simple, easy to assemble, and so yummy when you’re in need of a filling snack – great to bring to the movies, work, or to keep in your car (obviously not during the warmer months).

Weather.com says that our temperature here in Sarasota is 38 degrees – “feels like 30” (!!). On top of that, it’s raining – ice cold, bone-chilling rain. I am freezing. For some reason, 38 degrees here feels colder to me than 38 degrees up north – maybe because our brains are telling us that this is not right or because the buildings aren’t prepared for this… I don’t know, but I do know that all I want is warmth – a warm shower, a warm blanket, a warm (or boiling hot) drink, and very warm food. So this morning (afternoon, I guess), when we finally emerged from the layers of down and fuzzy coziness that is our bed, I made some oatmeal.

Ingredients:

  • Rolled oats (we used about 1 cup)

Oats

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 egg
  • 365 brand grade B pure maple syrup
  • 1-2 tbsp Bob’s Red Mill wheat germ
  • 1-2 tbsp Bob’s Red Mill flaxseed meal
  • about 1/2 tsp cinnamon (This is our favorite.)
  • salt
  • 2 tbsp pomegranate seeds
  • 2 tbsp chopped walnuts

After years of wanting to have pomegranate seeds as a staple at home but feeling afraid to break through that complicated-looking fruit, I finally made my brother-in-law teach me how to extract the seeds cleanly and efficiently. A very similar tutorial can be found here (although I find they can be kept for up to a week in the fridge, not two days like the link recommends). And here are the beautiful results:

Pomegranate seeds

I start by heating the water and almond milk on the stove until the liquid starts to boil. I add the oats, lower the heat to medium-high, and stir occasionally. This takes 5-10 minutes, so you have time to prep the other ingredients. When the oats have absorbed about half the liquid, I add about 1 tbsp of syrup, the wheat germ, a dash of cinnamon, and a sprinkle of salt. When the liquid is almost entirely absorbed, I reduce the heat to low and stir in the egg. You don’t want it to scramble, but you of course want it to cook through, so stir thoroughly for one to two minutes.

I scoop the portions onto the serving plates and then top with cinnamon, syrup, flax, pomegranate seeds, and walnuts. Here it is!

Oatmeal

Hope everyone else is finding ways to stay comfy and warm today, whether you’re here in Florida or up in the real frigid temps of the north. I hear a tea kettle and a hot tub calling…

(‘Shoe, now you can make it – or I will make it for you in 27 days, not that I’m counting.)

As much as I hate to accept it, Ethan’s trip (oh, and my sister and brother-in-law’s – they understand, though, that it’s all about E) to Sarasota is almost over. They are heading back to snowy Cleveland today, so I’m taking a little time right now to post a selection of photos I’ve taken of E during these last couple of weeks.

Here are some of the images from his holiday session that were not chosen for his New Year’s card:

E New Year's Card Photo Shoot

And from E’s first visit to the beach, which was incredibly short lived due to his sleepiness. At least we captured it in the 10 minutes we were there. He was mesmerized by the sand/shells – probably a very interesting feeling on his feet!

And the scene from his poolside shoot…

Some family shots can be found here.

Thanks for a great trip, little man! Can’t wait to smooch you in Cleveland in February (yes, I said “can’t wait” and “Cleveland in February” in one sentence – only E can inspire that statement out of me). One month and counting. I miss him already, and he’s right here next to me playing away on his new exersaucer:

Ethan Happy New Year

Ethan’s holiday photo that we made into a New Year’s card from Tiny Prints. He’s either ringing in the New Year and inviting you to as well, dealing Black Jack, or participating in a barbershop singing group… He’s adorable, nonetheless!

Happy New Year, everyone!

Today was great for two big reasons: one, Ethan (nephew) is here, and two, my mom made a spectacular dinner in honor of my birthday that I enjoyed with my parents, my sister and brother-in-law (whilst Ethan slept soundly in the other room), my husband, and my aunt and uncle. 🙂 (Knock on wood.)

This will be my last post until Monday the 28th, so I hope everyone who celebrates Christmas has a fabulous one and that everyone who doesn’t gets some restful time off. We’re off to Boston to brave the frigid temperatures for the Campbell Family Christmas. Palm trees just don’t cut it like snow on the ground, Christmas Eve wildness with the Sacco crew, and presents flying all over the living room before dawn on Christmas day…

Here are a few photos from today.

E loves to fly, and I am loving his smiley happy face and the blue, blue sky:

Super E

What are you so concerned about, E? (Possibly the fact that we kept him up a tad too long when he should’ve been heading in for a nap. He was an excellent sport but very, very sleepy.)

Ethan

Yummm. Best salad and pastry creation:

And delicious flan/crunchy caramel dessert:

🙂 I love making adults wear birthday party hats, if only just to see how silly everyone looks trying to have intelligent discussions (or not intelligent discussions – just even sitting there, really) whilst wearing them. No, I didn’t post a photo of said adults in the hats, because I have a feeling I’d get in big trouble. This will have to do:

Have a great rest of the week! Be back Monday to defrost.

Yesterday we went to the Bucs-Jets game in Tampa with Larry & Erin (see their wedding here and Erin’s blog here) and Dan & Sharon. Dan scored some pretty ridiculous seats (50-yard line, 2nd row behind the Jets bench), so I brought along my camera and favorite lens (below) to help keep myself focused on the game (I have the tendency to space out and watch the crowd and all surroundings more than what’s happening on the field/court).

Well, my lens might have caught the eye of the 6-year-old and his dad seated behind us (“That is BIG!”), but these guys sure did make me feel like a wuss:

Anyway, I snapped some shots at the game, even though I could see why those beastly zooms have their place in sports photography. My 200mm couldn’t capture the up-close-and-personal stuff, but it does illustrate how sick our seats were!

Our depressed Buc fan neighbors left, so Dan & Sharon joined us in our row:

And a bit of mayhem at the end of the game with a few wild Jets fans. The guy in the #99 Gastineau jersey was shouting, “I’ve been a Jets fan for 30 years! You’re 66 years old (to the coach); you haven’t won anything!” and “You’re SUPPOSED to win this game!” and also yelling at one of the players for injuring himself last week. Strangest fandom ever during a blowout win. One nearby Jets fan mumbled, “I never thought I’d have to take out a Jets fan…” And another made the guy apologize to his children for his foul language. I took this shot after we scooched down a few seats away from them out of fear:

BucsJetsMayhem

And then we took the token shots of ourselves (our pink faces are a combination of the sunlight reflecting off of the red seats and our being toasty from the shocking 85-degree mid-December heat):

Larin:

Thanks for a great first experience at Raymond James Stadium! (Can’t really beat it, unless Brady’s right in front of us instead of Clemens, the Jets’ QB.) Congratulations, Dan & Sharon (and Jets fans), for the 26-3 win.
